I remember this tornado well. I was 26 then and lived in Fairborn, Ohio. I laid under a concrete porch with a friend and her 6 kids. We watched it come across the sky headed for Xenia, Ohio. HUGE -DEVASTATING TORNADO.... JUST A BIG BLACK SWARMING WALL. I hope I never experience anything like it again. The lives lost, the tremendous damage done. My friends and family were on rescue and clean-up crews for days helping. Airmen from WPAFB helped for days searching for injured. We listened to ambulances for several days.
Xenia, Ohio never rebuilt much of their town except the housing project that was flattened. Most of downtown businesses that were destroyed are now parking lots. Government buildings and schools were rebuilt but thats about all. The tornado destroyed a housing development and went right down Main Street.
I am so thankful that it never touched down in Fairborn, Ohio - watching it come across the sky from a distance was bad enough.
I have lived in Ohio, Georgia, South Carolina, and Kentucky and have seen several large tornados in my lifetime, but I hope I never live to see one like this one again.
Nature has its wrath and can really unleash it at times. It surely did on that April afternoon.
Strange thing - the sky was a clear blue and it was a sunny day when it came through. It wasn't hiding in a thunder cloud, it was just on the ground and moving fast.
This one is a "record holder" I'm sure..........

i survived this monster and i have a deep fear/respect for mother nature. it changes one's entire outlook when they see and realize that an entire town can be demolished in a minute or two. when they rated this tornado, meteorologists wanted to create a new rating: F6 because of it's massive size and wind speed. i remember seeing pres. Nixon arrive here in Xenia on the Airforceone helicopter.

I was in the Air Force this year and stationed at Lockbourne AFB, changed to Rickenbacher AFB.   I happened to be flying home from Wisconsin at the time of the storms.  Our airplane was a propeller driven job from North Central Airlines lovingly called the "Blue Goose".  I was a Inflight Refueling Specialist at the time and used to flying in most types of weather.  This day, however, sticks in my mind as the worst day I ever had in the air.  The icing was so bad that it was building up on the propellers and being slammed into the fusilage making the most horrific noise.  Extreme turbulance and the loud explosions from the ice had me convinced I was going to die on that day.  Thankfully God had other plans for me.  I remember watching the news when I landed that day and felt blessed to still be alive.  Unfortunately, many others did not survive.
