I have been fascinated by tornadoes ever since my Mom took my brother and me into the basement as a tornado swept through our neighborhood in Griffith, Indiana. Going upstairs to see our swing set knocked over is one of my very earliest childhood memories. Now, thanks to this Tornado History Project, I have been able to pinpoint the exact date of that event. It was this tornado. We lived on Oakwood Avenue, and the zoom feature of this program allowed me to see the exact of the tornado, which began very close to our home.

This fascination has been so enduring that I finally decided to go on a "storm chase" tour organized by Tempest Tours in Texas. During the last week in May, our three-van caravan traipsed through Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and a small part of Texas. During the first day of our chase, we encountered a lone supercell in Northern Oklahoma that produced approximately ten tornadoes. It was an incredible, remarkable experience.
